Environment Today: Iran-Iraq earthquake

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit at 9:48pm on Sunday the 12th, taking with it over 500 lives. Near the border of Iran and Iraq, the quake was felt in both Tehran and Baghdad, leaving thousands devastated in its wake.

It is important to understand the impacts of natural disasters such as this earthquake not only on human life, but also on the environment.

The secondary effects of an earthquake can result in long lasting damage that could possibly take more lives. Raptured gas and electrical lines can lead to deadly fires, leaking and broken pipelines can cause flooding and a release of sewage, and hazardous or radioactive materials have a greater possibility of being released into water, air, and soil sources.

These environmental disasters are often magnified in poverty stricken communities that are given very little governmental aid. Bellow are reliable links for donations and articles for further information.
